Sensitivity to Weather Changes: What Happens When the Weather Changes?

Sunshine in the morning, rain in the afternoon, and significantly cooler temperatures the next day: Especially during the transitional seasons, the weather can change in a short period of time. Some people not only notice these weather changes when they look out the window, but also report headaches, fatigue, or a general feeling of discomfort.

In everyday language, people often talk about being "sensitive to the weather." But can a change in the weather actually affect how we feel? What role do temperature, air pressure, and humidity play? And why do some people seem to notice these changes more than others?

What does "being sensitive to the weather" mean?

Our bodies are constantly responding to their environment. For example, if the outside temperature changes, our bodies adjust their heat loss and heat production accordingly. Blood flow to the skin and sweat production are also part of this ongoing regulatory process.

The term " weather sensitivity " does not describe a clearly defined, distinct medical condition, but rather subjectively perceived symptoms associated with changes in the weather.

However, not every supposed reaction to the weather can be unequivocally attributed to a specific weather factor from a scientific standpoint. Precisely because temperature, air pressure, humidity, and other environmental conditions often change simultaneously, it is difficult to consider individual factors in isolation.

What symptoms are associated with weather sensitivity?

People who describe themselves as being sensitive to weather changes report, for example , headaches, fatigue, dizziness, circulatory problems, or general malaise.

However, these symptoms can have numerous causes and cannot automatically be attributed to a change in the weather. In particular, the relationship between certain weather factors and migraines has been studied scientifically.

What role do temperature, air pressure, and humidity play?

The weather is made up of various factors that often change simultaneously. For this reason, it is scientifically difficult to clearly determine the influence of individual weather conditions.

  • Temperature:
    Our bodies react immediately to changes in ambient temperature. When it is hot, the body releases heat through increased blood flow to the skin and sweating, among other mechanisms. When it is cold, blood flow to the skin is reduced to limit heat loss. These reactions are part of normal thermoregulation.

  • Air Pressure:
    Changes in atmospheric air pressure are primarily studied in relation to headaches and migraines. A systematic review and meta-analysis from 2025, which included a total of 31 studies, found statistical associations between migraine attacks and certain weather factors, particularly temperature and air pressure. However, the results of the individual studies are not entirely consistent.

  • Humidity:
    Humidity is also being investigated as a potential contributing factor. The scientific findings have been less conclusive so far. For example, the 2025 meta-analysis found no statistically significant association between humidity and migraine attacks.

Current research therefore casts doubt on overly simplistic statements such as “falling air pressure causes headaches.” Certain weather conditions may be linked to symptoms in some people—but the extent of this link appears to vary from person to person.

Why do some people react more strongly to changes in the weather?

There is still no complete explanation for why one person clearly notices a change in the weather while another does not at all.

Furthermore, the weather does not affect our well-being in isolation. Sleep, stress, hydration, exercise, and individual health factors can all play a role at the same time.

For migraines in particular, the weather is therefore generally considered to be one of several possible triggers or contributing factors, rather than the sole cause.

What can you do if you're sensitive to changes in the weather?

We can't change the weather itself. However, certain everyday habits can help support our overall well-being and normal bodily functions.

  • Exercise and time spent outdoors: Regular physical activity contributes to cardiovascular health. A walk also adds some movement to your daily routine—regardless of whether the weather is perfect or not.
  • Stay Hydrated: Especially when temperatures are high, the body loses fluids through sweating. It is therefore important to stay hydrated, particularly on warm days.

  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule: Getting enough sleep—and keeping it as regular as possible—is essential for overall well-being.

  • Plan for intentional rest: Stress can affect your well-being just as much as external conditions. Regular periods of rest, exercise, or time spent outdoors can therefore be a valuable addition to your daily routine.

Do contrast showers or saunas help with sensitivity to weather changes?

Contrast showers and sauna sessions are often recommended for people who are sensitive to weather changes.

Our bodies do indeed respond to heat and cold by making various adjustments to our thermoregulation and cardiovascular systems. However , this does not automatically mean that saunas or contrast showers can prevent or treat sensitivity to weather changes.

To date, there is no sufficiently robust scientific basis for such a specific effect.

Those who tolerate saunas, hot and cold showers, or other temperature stimuli well can therefore incorporate them into their personal wellness routine—but they should not be viewed as a scientifically proven treatment for sensitivity to weather changes.


Sensitive to the weather? Pay attention to your own rhythm

If you feel like you regularly react to certain weather conditions, you can keep a short journal for a few weeks. In it, you can record, for example, any physical symptoms, sleep, stress, physical activity, and specific weather conditions.

This may make it possible to observe personal patterns. However, this does not automatically imply a causal relationship with the weather.

If you experience severe, new, or persistent symptoms, you should consult a doctor to determine the cause.

Conclusion: Sensitivity to weather varies from person to person

It goes without saying that our bodies react to changes in their environment—this is particularly evident in the regulation of body temperature. Whether and to what extent changes in the weather also trigger specific symptoms is much more difficult to answer.

For some medical conditions, particularly migraines, recent studies have shown a link to weather factors such as temperature and air pressure. At the same time, the results vary depending on the weather factor and from person to person.

Sensitivity to weather cannot, therefore, be attributed to a single cause. Rather, external conditions may be just one of several factors that influence an individual's well-being.

We can't change the weather. However, by staying active, getting enough sleep and fluids, and taking deliberate breaks to relax, we can create the right conditions for our overall well-being.
